Frequently Asked Questions
Omega-3 plays an important role in supporting healthy ageing¹,². It is an essential nutrient for the body that you can only get through outside sources such as diet and supplements. Research indicates that omega-3 fatty acids provide considerable benefits for cardiovascular health, including maintaining triglyceride levels³ and maintaining blood pressure4 within healthy ranges. They also help to support a healthy brain and eyes². If you are looking to support these key organs, omega-3 supplements derived from fish oil can be a beneficial addition to your diet⁵.
Omega-3s are available in several forms, including: Fish Oil: Sourced from cold-water fatty fish such as cod, sardines, anchovies, mackerel, and herring. It primarily contains two key types of omega-3s: EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Algae Oil: A plant-based omega-3 source, mainly providing DHA, which is derived from algae. This is a suitable alternative for vegetarians and vegans, as it offers a direct source of omega-3s. Plant-derived. This includes sources such as chia seeds, walnuts, and certain fortified foods. These sources primarily provide ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), another type of omega-3. However, the body’s ability to convert ALA to EPA and DHA is quite limited—only about 5-8% for EPA and 0.5% for DHA⁶,⁷.
75% of people in the UK don’t get enough Omega-3 in their diet¹². If you're not following the UK Government recommendation of consuming two portions of fish per week, including one oily fish such as salmon or sardines¹³, consider taking Omega-3 EPA/DHA supplements⁵. Seven Seas offers Premium Omega-3 for up to 70% better absorption by the body1¹⁴.
On average, it takes 3 months daily supplementation with at least 1g Omega-3 of combined EPA and DHA to reach the 8% Omega-3 index levels⁵,¹⁵. The Omega-3 index is a simple test that looks at the amount of Omega-3 in your blood. A growing body of research suggests it should be above 8% to support cardiovascular health⁴. To sustain this in the long-term, you will need to maintain the same diet and supplementation habits⁵.
