1Supplemental folic acid intake increases the maternal folate status. A low maternal folate level is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus. For women of child-bearing age beneficial effect is obtained with a supplemental folic acid daily intake of 400μg for at least one month before and up to three months after conception. Development of neural tube defects have several risk factors. Altering a single factor may or may not have a beneficial effect.

2Maternal intake of Omega-3 DHA contributes to the normal brain and eye development of the foetus. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 200mg DHA, in addition to the recommended daily intake of Omega-3, 250 mg of EPA and DHA combined.

3Vitamin D and Iron have a role in the process of cell division.

4Iron contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin.
